on the big island we were on kona side but on the kahala coast. there are resorts but pretty much nothing else so we went to kona a few times to eat but mostly we hung out at the hotel. on the grounds it said that there was a petroglyph park so we drove down there and hiked in. it took forever to find them but you are walking through lava fields with caves so it was still kind of cool.

inside a cave that was an actual shelter for native hawaiians.

kiley at the fish pond

kiley and i sat by the fish pond while matt and caleb went to see if they could find any more petroglyphs. they did not find any. this is what we saw

it is definitely a petroglyph and really cool if you think about it being hundreds of years old and the tools that were used to make it i guess it was just the billing of it that made us think it was a little more than 3 on a few rocks.

matt at the ironman finish with his medal

caleb was trying to dodge my camera but i kept shooting and i really like this picture!

the hotel was beautiful with koi ponds inside and out

it had a beautiful pool, beach and grounds with hammocks but everything there is so expensive that it kind of puts a downer on everything else. 5$ for a bottle of water!

there was so much sun everyone got their numbers literally burned on them!

on the big island there is a lot of black lava rock, there is also white coral rock so you see a lot of messages written on the lava with the coral so this was the hotel's tribute to the ironman, it was really cool. the race is called the honu so you can see the outline of a turtle on the edge.
as with the last ironman matt wanted to show the kids the 56 mile bike ride he did. after a while this is what we all did:

we can't do it in a car i don't know how anyone can stand it on a bike, it's just too long!
i am glad matt was able to participate. it is a tough race and a lot of people just don't make the time cut offs. i really don't think this is out of his system until he completes the full one. i will follow him around to races as long as it is in fun places!

WHOA The Ironman?!?! That's crazy, my dad was talking about it to me the other day saying some of his guard friends were going to be in it! BIg Island looks like sooo much fun too!!! Lol my dad probably would've done the same thing to all of us and made us ride along the bike trail to "show us" where he went, when really we know he'd probably just want to re-live his experience :) lol, but it looked like a really fun trip!
Big island has it's own beauty! What a trip. . .lucky you get to go.
Matt looks huge. He has some guns. I have never seen him so built. And, Caleb looks like a poet or an artist. Great pics! Congrats Matt!

Kudos to Matt!
I am glad you guys were able to spend some time together before the wedding!
I LOVE the big island and that's so cool that Matt did really well and trained so hard. I want to try a half marathon but I don't know if I can handle it...we'll see. Great pictures though!!
