Molokai

caleb had a great opportunity to go to molokai for a scout high adventure for a week. he had an awesome time, we hope to get better pictures from the Young men's president but matt went over for a few days and took an old camera we had and got a few that are a little fuzzy but still pretty cool. they spent 3 days in a boat house right on the ocean, then hiked to kalaupapa, a leper colony, i will try and explain better when i get the better pictures but it is a privately owned place where they used to send lepers from all over the world to a "remote" island to live so they wouldn't infect other people. the remaining patients are in their 80's. you have to be sponsored by someone there to spend the night. you have to hike in there is no other way to get there unless you want to pay for a donkey ride. i know it took some of them an hour some more to get back up the mountain but not sure how long to get down but it was quite a hike.

matt took this picture at the bottom, he said that the trail is right between the 2 palm trees all the way down the mountain.
this is the trail down, it's steps all the way, very hard on your legs
this is the view from the top of the trail. kalaupapa is about half way up that bay coastline.
this is a giant crater down there, if you look right in the middle you can see green water, they have sent sonar down there and have never found the bottom!

it really was a once in a lifetime experience. the guy from our ward who lived on molokai his whole life had only been once, it is not easy to get in. it was by far caleb's favorite part of the trip! more to come later..
p.s. why is it that my kids get to have all these "once in a lifetime" experiences??!!

What a great experience for them all! When jared got home, that's all he could talk about for a week. . . seriously. He had so much fun.

I've been waiting for an update on their visit to the leper colony- it just sounded so interesting. Hawaii is just absolutely beautiful, you guys are so lucky to live there!

I saw Caleb right after he got back and he told me what a great time he had. It was really nice to hear about it straight from him.
